I pat myself on the back for realizing that writing can be a helpful source to make a bad mood go away, or to at least address one. I've been in a weird mood today and when I finally acknowledged my bad mood, my first thought was to write about it. I was told by someone in my life that it isn't good to write down the negatives (which I agree with) but I feel that what I am about to write will not be a couple of paragraphs picking apart my bad mood. Instead, I hope they'll give whoever is reading this some tips on dealing with bad moods, because I know we all have them and let's face it. Bad moods are, well, bad.
Bad moods are also normal. They come and go. It's ok to feel crappy sometimes, but you have to know how to act on it when you do. Don't sit in your room and mellow. Don't sit there all alone feeling sorry for yourself. Don't start to dwell on all the negatives in your life. Instead, do something that you know will make you happy. My biggest tip is to make a list when you're in a good mood (or add to the list as you go about your life) of things that make you happy. If you need a little inspiration, I'll give you a few that are on my list:
- Write
- Take a shower/bath using my Lush/Bath and Body Works products
- Do a fancy makeup look even if I have nowhere to go
- Bake cookies
- Organize
- Dance in my room
Other things you can do to get rid of a bad mood:
- go on a walk
- read a book
- clean your room (this one helps me SO much)
- listen to music
- go for a drive
- do a crossword puzzle
- cook
Remember that this is your list and no one else's. No one is going to see this list unless you want them to, so if there is something that makes you happy and you're a little embarrassed by it, don't be! The only thing that matters is that it will improve your mood. Another big tip is to talk about it. This doesn't have to mean a parent or a friend... You could literally sit in front of your mirror and just talk to your reflection. I've found it extremely helpful to do so because there is no one there to judge you and you get everything out in the open. Bad moods can occur more frequently if you keep things bottled up and never speak of them, so I encourage you to talk about how you're feeling,- good or bad things- what's been going on in your life, anything really.
What I hope you'll take away from this is that everyone gets into bad moods or weird funks, and that's ok- you just have to know how to deal with them.
